7th Annual Luxury Row Celebration of the Arts

Friday, November 02, 2012

Luxury Row hosted its 7th Annual Celebration of the Arts last night to highlight the work of "Hawaii's Modern Masters", including a1000x's very own John Koga and Ryan Higa

These exclusive pieces of work from Koga and Higa (Gruntled Funk) were displayed at Waikiki luxury retailers Chanel and Coach, respectively. Last night's opening was something spectacular and I can't wait for next year. If you missed it, all the amazing work will still be open for display from Nov. 1st to Dec. 2nd.

For your viewing pleasure.

Wednesday, October 31, 2012

Back in spring of last year we started the official a1000x video, filmed by the extremely talented Roy Kimura of Kinetic Productions. Since then we have been overwhelmingly busy and put the project on hold. Last Sunday, we excitedly met up again to conclude the filming process of the video. Some special appearances in the film include Jasper Wong, John Koga, and Roxanne Ortiz. I'll keep all you guys updated on the official release date. Again special thanks to Roy Kimura for producing this awesome video. Get excited.

Here's some photos from the shoot.

a1000x Student Artist Scholarship Program

Tuesday, October 23, 2012

You guys might have heard about our recently started our Scholarship Tee Campaign to raise money toward our Student Artist Scholarship.

Let me elaborate a little more on it. College season has come around for me, and I know just as well as anyone that it's not easy...or cheap. It's nerve-racking. There's a lot of uncertainty and a lot of energy that you have to put into it without any guarantees. Here's where a1000x comes in.

Our scholarship(s) will be awarded to deserving student artists who exhibit exceptional artistic talent in 3D art, 2D art, photography, or design. You name it--we want it. It will be a submission-based contest with portfolios juried by a panel of top-notch Hawaii artists from a variety of artistic fields. We are looking for well-rounded artists to award these scholarships too.

Here are the details:

1. There will be three (3) scholarships awarded. Two students will be awarded $2000 scholarships each. One student will be awarded a $5000 scholarship.

2. Applying student must be a high school Senior, or a Freshman or Sophomore at a college, apprenticeship or work program involved with art. For this inaugural year, the program is open to students from Hawaii. We are looking in to opening up the program nationwide, but...it's too hard to tackle that right now.

3. Applying students must submit a portfolio of work of no less than five (5) and no more than ten (10) works. Submissions should NOT be original works of art. Every effort will be made to return submissions but in case of unforeseen circumstances, a1000x will not be responsible for lost portfolios.

4. Applying students must also submit a general application form and an accompanying portfolio form, which will provide titles and descriptions of submitted work.

5. DEADLINE: We will start accepting submissions from November 19, 2012. All submissions must be postmarked by March 29, 2013 to be considered. Submissions can be sent to a1000x.com, 1755 Glen Ave. Wahiawa, HI 96786.

6. Works will be juried by a panel of established Hawaii artists. In the case of more than 30 applicants, judges will make a preliminary selection of the top ten applicants. Scholarships will be awarded to the top three.

7. Judging will be based on portfolio review but will also take into consideration student's application form, including extra-curricular activities, G.P.A. and answers to essay questions. Judges have final determination of winners. a1000x.com and its agents will not participate in judging.

8. Winners will be notified in April 2013 (actual date to determined). Scholarships are cash prizes and may be used for any purpose useful to winners' post-secondary, art-related schooling or training.

9. Winners will be publicly awarded in May

10. With submission, applicants agree to allow their likeness and work to be used in publicity for the a1000x scholarship program, including, but not limited to, press releases, print articles, television, website, and social media publicity.

Look out for deadline details as we launch the program. Thank you for your support and please help us give a new generation of artists a great start. Jack.

Introducing Scholarship Tees

Tuesday, October 16, 2012

Hey Everyone,

It's been awhile. I've been busy trying to figure out my next steps in life--took my SATs a couple weeks ago, waiting to take my ACTs in a week, finished my college essay!, started applying to schools all over the U.S. and looking for scholarships.

Needless to say, the business has taken a little hit. But there are so many things going on with a1000x that are keeping me energized. We've had some great, and FREE, press lately, and I'm super excited about a few collaborations that have started or are being planned.

About a month ago I started thinking about how to make a difference with a1000x.com. So with my own college experiences starting, here's what I came up with for our focus for the charitable giving side of things. We've decided to start a scholarship program for student artists, and we're really excited about this.

We've teamed up with our friends at TeeSpring.com, which is a crowdfunding service for tshirts (similar to Kickstarter.com). In the next few months we will be introducing special Scholarship Tees to raise money specifically for the a1000x scholarship program.

Why Partner with TeeSpring.com?

[Things always have a way of falling into place. I was thinking about starting this scholarship program when, BAM, we got a whole lot of press on MSN.com. The guys at TeeSpring called me up and we set up a partnership. At the same time, with all that press, we have been getting a steady stream of artists and students looking to become part of a1000x. We can't take everyone because we're still so small, but artists are wanting to get their designs out to the public and to keep making a living. TeeSpring is a great way to do it because the artist doesn't put out any money up front and they get to market their designs to potential customers! a1000x.com will now be offering a quick gateway to TeeSpring.com for any artists that want to start up on their own. Win-Win.]

Here's our first Tee:

We hope you like it and will commit to supporting this cause. We need 200 orders in the next 10 days to "tip" the campaign into production. If we don't reach the goal, you won't be charged and the shirt will DIE

$20 pledge gets you this cool design on a mens or womens style tshirt. Makes a great holiday gift, yes?!

ALL profits from these Scholarship Tees are going toward the a1000x Scholarship. I'll explain more about the program in another post, including how you can help us identify student artists. The entire scholarship tee thing is a great fit for us--first, we make tshirts, and second, we're not a non-profit so it's hard to ask people to donate to a scholarship when they can't get a tax deduction from us. At least this way you get a -tshirt (a t-shirt with the added benefit of making you feel like you did a good thing).

Oh, and if you don't like this particular design, no biggie, we'll be making more designs in the coming months.

So go to: teespring.com/a1000x to help. Again, you won't be charged unless we reach our goal. We're also giving all donors a 20% discount code to use at a1000x.com. And if we double our quantity goal (i.e. reach 400 shirts) by our deadline we'll give every donor an additional cool mystery gift. Oh, yeah.

And please like it, tweet it, pin it, and suggest it to friends and family.

Thanks for supporting a1000x. I think this is the beginning of something great.

“Kigen” New Works by Ogi at Loft in Space

Wednesday, April 25, 2012

Last week I stopped by Ogi's new solo show at Loft in Space. You might have seen Ogi's work around Fresh Cafe before, because he is one of the participating artists in Powwow Hawaii. The atmosphere at the show was mellow, full of great art and great people. Here are a few shots from night.
